What we know today as the Mackinaw coat was designed by a trader in 1811. An uncomplicated design to be made in mackinaw material. Originally it was intended for use by the Army, but that was to change, and it was the robustness of the design that was to endure. The first Mackinaws were made out of a heavy blue, water repellent, mackinaw material. When the blue material ran out it was soon replaced by red, and then red and black mackinaw. It was the cut and shape of the coat that became established. The outer material and the colours used being frequently changed to suit needs and availability. A mackinaw coat is cut in such a manner to allow it to be buttoned up either left or right , depending on wind direction. The mackinaw coat gained a repution as a practical, hardwearing coat and was quickly adopted by cowboys and loggers.

This DELUXE version is a warm, wool  jacket with a wool blend lining.

Two hand warmer pockets and two lower pockets with flaps, which can be 'tucked' inside, The pockets are edged with leather, adding duribility and style.

A large collar that can be turned up on very cold days. Designed to button up to the left or right. This is a loose fitting overcoat. Back length appox. 31".

A "Sack Coat" was so named due to it's shape. It was cut straight at the back in two pieces, unlike the more formal Frock Coat, which had curved seams and pleats at the back.It also had a one piece sleeve. The Sack Coat was commonly worn by the 1870's as an outdoor, working jacket.  Fully lined.

All coats are individually made (therefore no two are the same) and are interlined to give 'body' and shape.  They can be tailored to your needs and details, such as lapel size and shape can be altered to your choice but will incure extra cost. Please email for details.Fully lined .
